I also encountered this problem. It seems to me that the following code finds that the registry parameter is invalid.
See:
lib/crawler.js > getPackageJsonDependencies > _getDependenciesFrom lost the registry parameter in options, resulting in the default registry (http://registry.npmjs.org), which will happen if your repository is a private server.
