Valve Index and/or support for generic OpenVR headsets #12
Comments
Hi Jonathan,
This was original released as a "devkit" to encourage developers to explore
use of keyboards in VR. Due to a number of technical issues, we were not
able to reach a consumer level experience on Vive/Vive Pro ... so as a
result it has been a low priority. We have not tried (yet) with Index ...
so thank you for the feedback.
We also have an additional developer kit for the Microsoft MR platform, see
here <https://github.com/Logitech/labs_mrkeyboard_sdk>, and again our aim
here was to seed these kits with active developers in the area.
Is there any public information/links you can share on your use of keyboard
in VR? That would help us understand better potential VR keyboard users
going forward.
Best regards, Aidan

I'm trying to use this software with the newly released Valve Index. It
seems this project is based in OpenVR, as the keyboard model appears, and
keyboard keys have the proper animation when pressed, etc., but the view is
very skewed. My first guess is that right now the software isn't
compensating for the wider FOV of the Valve Index.

, without source code there's not an easy way to add this in as an option
manually. Will 11 be resolved, and the source code released? If that's not
possible, can some configuration options be added for FOV, resolution etc?
It's understandable if the hand tracking wouldn't work for anything but the
Vive and vive pro, but just having the actual keyboard with depressed key
animations would be incredible.

The two interests I have for it are development and gaming. For gaming, using the latest VR Desktop builds, wireless to a Quest provides a pretty nice experience, and the ability to use a keyboard in that space would allow for WASD in addition to controller gaming. For development, I think a lot of developers have the "Minority Report"dream of a vast 3D surface to put debug windows, outputs, multiple projects, etc. on. In the real world, having a lot of monitors gets messy, and you can't drag and move them around at will. I think ultimately we'll get to where we can have 8k+ desktop area in VR that we can arrange around us at will, and we'll want to have our mice and keyboards with us. |
