The best way to debug is by using the C/C++ IDE's (Visual Studio, Xcode, Clion, Code::Blocks,...) supported by Kinc/kincmake. For vscode search for the Kinc extension which you can use to directly open and debug Kinc projects.
Note that if you are using the Direct3D 11 backend (which is the default) in Windows 7 or 8 system in a debug build, you will need to install the Windows 8.x SDK to acquire D3D11_1SDKLayers.dll, which is necessary for Direct3D 11's debug mode which is activated by default when running a Kinc application in debug mode. This is not available through the Visual Studio installer, and you will have to download and install it manually. You can find the latest Windows 8 SDK on this page.
