Title

Molyneux et al. coin "neglected tropical disease"

Date or Period 📅

11-Oct 2005 as per the paper.

Elevator Pitch

NTDs are analysed through a formal framework that help converge diverse efforts in tackling diseases that incapacitate impoverished regions.

Justification

Unformed Thoughts

See Molyneux et al. (2021) for a history of NTDs. They find NTDs being called as such first by Molyneux et al. (2005) and then by Hotez et al. (2006). They also trace the following origins of NTD research:

  • Warren's Great Neglected Diseases of Mankind programme from 1978 to 1987 (Keating, 2017)
  • WHO's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, whose inception began in 1975 and was formally established by 1977 (Executive Board, 71, 1982)
  • Other efforts in mass treatments in the 1950s and 1960s (see Hawking, 1962; Hakwing & Marques, 1967; and WHO, 2003: 8).
