jansdemo in existing cluster, error on certificate issue

howdy, new cluster, with other stuff installed, using self-signed certs.
Using the jansdemo shell script, removing all the set up stuff since this is an existing cluster (doing this to try to debug my other issues)...
But, when I install helm, i get several of these:
E1201 11:48:50.974569 340783 memcache.go:238] couldn't get current server API group list: Get "https://<hostname>:6443/api?timeout=32s": x509: certificate signed by unknown authority (possibly because of "crypto/rsa: verification error" while trying to verify candidate authority certificate "kubernetes")
I assume there should be a helm setting to tell is to be ok with self-signed? Can someone point me at this?

found that I missed fqdn, setting that helped
