According to the JATS documentation there is a list of 20 recommended fn-type attributes.
At eLife, we have added "other" for use in situations where we have one-off footnotes attached to authors (eg these authors are listed alphabetically). I suggest "Other" is added to the list.
Also, we use it to represent

Ethical information
I think these are pretty standard pieces of information now, so I would suggest adding them to the list of attributes recommended, or finding a suitable way to tag them.
Regarding clinical trial information, recommendations will come out of the Threaded Publications Working Group in due course.

The footnote may be attached to an author, a table cell, the article as a whole, or some other part of the article. It might be useful to divide the recommended values up according to where they are expected to be used.
