The current constraints within html5 form inputs are not showing the expected result. The browser should display a default message if the input value mismatches the constraints.

A search with parameters https://history.state.gov/search?q=china&within=documents&start-date=1040-11-22&end-date=2010&sort-by=relevance should display that the start year 1040 is underflowing the range.
