Summary

Our Video Player has undergone a massive overhaul. We have switched from video.js to shaka-player. This allows us to add allot of new features and fix many issues. Notably, it's now possible to watch higher quality video streams. A massive thank you to @absidue for their help and support on this!

This is a very large change to how we handle things. If you happen to see anything that seems broken compared to the last release, please consider commenting about it in the thread below so that we can look at it.

For users hoping to import their subscriptions from YouTube, the process should be much quicker and a lot smoother since we no longer fetch thumbnail information when importing from YouTube. The channel thumbnails in the sidebar will be populated as you navigate around the app.

We would also like to thank all the translators that make FreeTube more accessible to all of our users!

Note

The setting Export Playlists For Older FreeTube Versions will be deprecated in v0.24.0. This setting was introduced in v0.20.0 when we launched our full-fledged User Playlists. This allowed users to export their playlists into one big playlist and import the file into FreeTube versions older than v0.20.0. This setting is being deprecated because we don't recommend sticking with older versions of FreeTube. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of FreeTube ff you are still using an outdated version of FreeTube.

Note

This will be the last release to support macOS 10.15, as Electron v33.0.0 does not support this OS version. MacOS 11 (Big Sur) or later will be required to run future versions of FreeTube.

Known Issues

When using the Local API or the Invidious API it is possible that you will run into issues due to YouTube IP blocks. Please try to use a different Invidious Instance, VPN or proxy when you encounter those issues.

Would also prefer rolling back to video.js since the new player brings solutions to problems I never had + it's objectively not intuitive.

You can create a fork or keep using older app versions if you like, but we as volunteers do not have the bandwidth to support multiple players going forward. We strive to act on each bit of actionable feedback we receive as much as possible, and unfortunately, nonspecific overarching critiques like that do not give us much to work with.

Fair enough. I'm thankful that freetube exists however the player is. With that said, if it's not me, the someone else will make similar remarks because the old player was fine. It would help if the potential advantages of the new player are communicated a bit more comprehensively. Will it, for example, help maintaining the picture-in-picture for the next video in a playlist? Will it help maintaining theater mode? Does it make the freetube codebase a lot cleaner and more maintainable? ...etc

You can see here just some of the bugs with the old player that were fixed by the migration. We actually have an open PR for the specific feature you mention (#5903) that was made easier by the new player.

The big pause icon in the middle of the player is just annoying and gets in the way, I just reverted back to the previous flatpak version.

You can hide it with the same setting as in older versions of FreeTube: Display Play Button In Video Player in the Player section of the setting.

Also hope to have ability to set preferred captions language. Not sure why, but previous versions were showing the language once chosen. New version seems to ignore this.

On exactly same video Freetube 0.22 automatically loads translated captions. 0.21.3 loads just auto-generated captions with correct language. And even if I choose auto-generated captions without translation, next video again will be with translated captions. All the settings are exactly same for 0.22 and 0.21.

@qupear The logic didn't change it still picks the first one in the list, it never remembered the selected one between videos. The only difference is that we fixed the broken subtitle translation feature, so now it correctly shows up on all videos that don't have a subtitle track that matches your display language. So of course the translated track is going to get sorted higher in the subtitle list because it matches your display language.

Is there any design reason why, or is it just a technical limitation of using Shaka? I don't see any large difficulty in just putting a progress-bar type element underneath the video player, and then allowing the enabling/disabling of it.

The progress bar being there underneath the video was a great tool for accessibility, with not being able to check how far through a video you are without interacting with the player being, from what I can see, the main issue here.

This is shaka and not us. We are collecting as much community feedback as we can to iterate on the player.

We will re-evaluate if there is something that can be done here either by us or upstream.

This comment is regarding the Mac version. I have not tested this behavior on other platforms.

The keystroke for FreeTube's back button has been alt-left arrow. I think that shaka-player uses this keystroke to go back a few frames in the video. If the video itself has focus, al-left arrow doesn't invoke the back button. You have to click on another part of FreeTube's UI first and then alt-left arrow will function as before.

If I may recommend, it's always bugged me a bit that alt-left arrow was the keystroke for the back button anyway. On the mac, Command-left bracket is the most common way to invoke the back button. This keystroke currently does noting in FreeTube, near as I can tell.

Perhaps moving the back and forward function to command-left bracket and command-right bracket would solve both problems.

We definitely would not want to remove a keyboard shortcut that people have got used to, especially considering that it is the correct one for Windows and Linux, however it should be possible to add extra ones that we only activate on macOS.

Please open a feature request for those two extra macOS-only keyboard shortcuts if you want to see them added to FreeTube, please also mention in the feature request which characters you mean (, [ or {.

Thank you so much for the update. Videos feel like they start faster after clicking them as well. I would just like to request that the resolution button on the video match the theme. I'm using Dark Mode and clicking the resolution button shows me the available options on a white background.

Playback speed icon is a fixed one now instead of showing the current playback speed... this is a nitpick but I liked seeing what's the current playback speed as I like to change it often while I'm watching, through the keyboard hotkeys, so I need some visual feedback.

We have an open feature request here for showing a HUD/temporary overlay when the volume is changed by means other than the volume slider, maybe that feature request could be extended to treat the playback rate in a similar way.

@qupear That was intentionally removed because it was a major accessibility issue, as it made it impossible to open the playback rate menu unless you were using a mouse to hover over the button, touch screen users (e.g. mobile phones) couldn't use it at all.

You can still use FreeTube with just a mouse, you just need to click to open the menu like with all other player buttons that have menus.

YouTube patched the age-restriction bypass (they weren't forcing logging in in one specific place, now they are forcing logging in for age-restricted videos everywhere), now the only watch to watch age-restricted videos is in the official apps or website with an age-verified YouTube account.

Logging into FreeTube with a Google account would defeat the whole reason for FreeTube's existence, to be a more privacy friendly way of using YouTube. It would also put your YouTube account at risk, because you would be using it outside of the official YouTube apps.

We were only able to fix it for the local API, as for the Invidious API it needs to be fixed on the Invidious side. However once it is fixed on the Invidious side, it should start working automatically in FreeTube without any changes needed on the FreeTube side.

For the moment you can switch to the local API if you want to see content on the channel shorts tab.

Seeing the other posts on this thread, I second the request for an alternative element to the always-on progress bar, and visible playback speed (and resolution) on hover.

In 0.21.3 I was able to play a video PIP, then navigate around the app in the same window, but now the PIP closes when I navigate, and this feature was useful when preparing to select the next video towards the end.

@MrBelles PiP was never meant to stay open longer than while you were on the watch page, the fact that it did was a bug and also caused various bugs such as not saving your watch progress and sponsor block skipping not working.

Hey, thanks for all the hard work on this @absidue. I know the amount of work that can go into maintaining a video player, and I’m not questioning the move to Shaka Player—it looks great!—as long as we keep the ability to open videos in an external player.

PS: On a side note, ⌘+, no longer opens FreeTube’s settings page when the player is loaded (or in view, it seems). Instead, ⌘+, now loads (buffer, not play) the video instead.
