Hope this is the right place to request features ;)
Essentially, I suggest a pipe which emits a redstone signal if there are items passing through it. Perhaps the output signal strength could vary depending on number of items in pipe. Recipie could be stone pipe, comparator
Covered pipes - versions of the normal pipes, but opaque and so don't render items passing through them - useful for pipes hidden behind walls, where rendering the item is causing unneeded lag. Recipie could be pipe in crafting table ;)
