postgres_set is not working #66

                        postgres_pass database;
                        postgres_output text;
                        postgres_query  GET  "SELECT 1";
                        postgres_set $var 0 0 optional;
                        return 200 $var;

what is the wrong with the follow Code?
$var never displays
