Setting a consistant scale for the size of the map

Using a golden ratio map or a monitor resolution map.

Earth size is 25,000 circumference aproximately and can be used as a guide for
setting the size of the rest of the map. This scale can be mapped to 0-1 for the
0 - 25,000 range so that it makes for easy scaling back to the monitor resolution

The area of this map would be 375,000,000 mi^2
