The future of Endorphin

This is a list of all changes I'm planning for the next (and first) version of Endorphin.

Interface

• Redesign the browser
• Add a "New Tab"-Page
• Make settings a separate page
• Improve suggestions in the location bar (add the option to search something on the web instead of just showing matches in the history)
• Improved/easier password manager

Behind the scene

• WebEngine port (WIP: v0.13.0 #2)
• Code cleanups (part of WIP: v0.13.0 #2)
• Build system update (part of WIP: v0.13.0 #2)

Other

• Set up CI builds (GitHub actions?)
• .deb and .rpm packaging
• New installer for windows
• Add the browser to the official Debian package repos
• Platform specific features (KDE and Gnome built-in password manager support)
• Tor support

The WebEngine port

This is the part I'm currently working on. This takes a lot of time, as big parts of the browser need rewrites. The parts that require most work are:

• NetworkAccessManager has to be removed, so the adblocker, cookie handling and other parts of the browser need to be rewritten
• Plugins
• JavaScript APIs (They are used for translating strings on the built-in pages (start page, local directory list))

GitHub Actions

Sadly, we'll need to wait until Ubuntu 22.04 is available on GitHub actions, because we require QT 5.15 here, but 20.04 only has 5.12. (When it's released, we'll probably already need QT6)

Seems like a great idea! Thanks for your suggestion and your interest in this browser. The new Engine makes this a lot easier. I already have a few changes locally that I haven't pushed yet, so more improvements will be coming soon.I'm also working on a new plugin system, which allows installing plugins for most browsers, and also a new post-setup page, a concept for that is available on Figma:

A new release is coming on the 11th of April 2021. This release will be a preview release, not the final 0.13.0 yet, and will showcase the current state of Endorphin and to show everyone that Arora still exists and will continue to be improved. I chose this date because on that day, in the year 2008, the initial commit of Arora was made.

I tried compiling the project. I tested master and webengine. Both did not compile out of the box in Ubuntu 20.20. I fixed ../tools/cacheinfo/main.cpp and replaced Qt::endl with "\n", I also removed the translation generation.

I'm sorry about that, I have quite a few changes I only got on GitLab, I'll push them here in a minute.

Ubuntu 20.20

I only know about 20.10 and 20.04, which one of them are you using?

I'm sorry about your issues, because this project hasn't made a release yet and I'm trying to make this Qt 6 ready, only Qt 5.14 (In Ubuntu 20.10) and Qt 5.15 (In the upcoming Ubuntu 21.04) are supported right now.

There is also a bug with the new tab button right now, I'll publish a fix today.
