Came up during our Friday call today. D1 has a controlled vocabulary for names of data object formats:
https://github.com/DataONEorg/object-formats

the git repo has a template for proposing that a new format be added to the list, and for a metadata change to an existing format.

Corinna suggests that something similar might work for the units registry. Probably would! if this looks promising, start a project and collect related issues there. first steps would be to look at DB and see what fields are essential. an XML file would also contain the stmml node for copying.
