All DB operations should go through self.insert and self.retrieve, so that they can be overwritten by custom db logic #3

Some people will want to write to S3, some to Mongo, some to Postgres, etc. What we need to do is not be prescriptive in our DB of choice.

So, let's agree to an API, and put all of our DB functions behind methods on self.

self.insert_to_in_memory_db, self.retrieve_from_persistent_db, etc.
