I wonder if it might be worth adding a mode that allows COL tree exploration using the major L. ranks only?

I find myself unable to find basic things (e.g. Aves) that I would have otherwise been able to navigate to in all the previous editions. I know I'm amongst the least competent of your users, but I suspect there are others who'd struggle to know what all the intermediate ranks were between Chordata and Aves.

Why not use the tree search in those cases? Navigating Linnean ranks only could be done, it just adds to the already complex tree code (because of the placeholder items "unassigned XY"). And yoou might not find Aves at all there in the future when it becomes a subclass ;) See Vertebrata for example

But I suppose having the option to just view Linnean ranks makes sense.
