If add-ons have any breaking changes, AKS provides add-on service packs. These are similar to Kubernetes patches that clusters can consume as needed; Caveat being these specialized packages focus exclusively on add-on updates. Add on packs cover all the addons which are known to update minor version for breaking changes and maintain historically atleast more than 1 version mapping per Kubernetes version (This wont cover addons/ components that maintain one default version for all k8s versions eg: CNI, ama-logs) For instance, if an add-on introduces a minor version bump for a CVE fix, customers would need to manually initiate updates to apply these add-on service packs. This separation of add-on breaking changes and add-on packs from Kubernetes or LTS upgrades enables customers to update their add-ons independently of Kubernetes minor upgrades. It also means that, unlike in the past when customers had to wait for minor versions or breaking changes of add-ons to take effect by upgrading Kubernetes minor versions, they now no longer have to upgrade Kubernetes minor versions. ETA by H1 2025.
