I applaud your efforts in setting up the repo and sharing ideas and resources. I would like to also add my idea: the integration of a street map (e.g. Leaflet or Google Maps) and real-time satellite images (Sentinel 2 satellite). I found a time-lapse visualisation of this can be helpful to understand the spread of the fire, especially considering I am in close proximity to an affected area myself.
https://nationalmap.gov.au makes an attempt at this but has Error 400 sometimes with missing dates etc. (Maybe there will be more out there?)
The R {sen2r} package seems to allow downloads of the Sentinel 2 data (https://sen2r.ranghetti.info), however, more detailed vignettes will be helpful.
