Description

  • Design, Discovery, & Research
  • Unable to easily compare between files when grouped, requires many clicks to compare two groupings of files. In the below example to compare these three file lists this required ~13 clicks. AIBS would like to do this with dozens of file lists. We also talked about having a breadcrumb style presentation of the groupings when all expanded to save space and more compactly show the difference between groups.

Size" Small

Scope: We will not do the bread crumb thing at this time

User needs statement(s)

As a user I want to be able to compare 5+ lists of files without having to click 10+ times.
As a user I need ot be able to easily tell what is a scrollable area
As a user I would like to be able to resize list groups so I can compare groupings of thumbnails

This ticket has a few parts to it and here is the associated Figma design link

  1. Expand/collapse all functionality
  2. Improved file group styling
  • lists look like they "go behind" the right panel
  • transparency fading on bottom of groups
  • no scrollbar for outer container "page", only scrollbars for group containers
  1. Bottom of list groupings have flexible heights (style and functionality same as right panel)

After meeting with Yoav and Nicholas to clarify exact user needs, we decided on the following solution:
Implement functionality and new menu items at all folder levels (right click) to either expand ALL of the tree at once, or the inverse. Use fluent design icons shown here.

Yoav stated the gaps between were fine between groups and he preferred seeing the tree always as opposed to ever hiding it.
