Since we would like to welcome external contributors, there is a need to communicate with them, may it be Slack, Discord or something else.
@driccio @nroulon any suggestions?

I have mainly knowledge about Slack and Discord so they are the two options I am having in consideration:

Slack

Advantages

  • Used a lot in the professional world
  • Discussion threads

Drawbacks

  • Need to accept anyone who wants to join the server
  • No roles management, several slacks would be needed if there is a need for distinguishing maintainers, contributors and users for example
  • Poor audio support

Discord

Advantages

  • Highlight for Open source projects, with a way to search the open source projects on Discord itself (see https://discord.com/open-source)
  • Easy to join the server: an invitation can be created and used by anyone as long as they have the link (which we would put in the README) & no need for an account
  • Text & Audio channels, could be used for vocal meetings
  • Roles management (may be useful to have a section for the maintainers, another for the contributors and another for the
    users)

Drawbacks

  • No discussion threads

Other option: use github discussions, which has the advantage of being included in github

There is also https://gitter.im/ which is used by some popular open source projects
